1) Shiny bits generally now reflect the ambient light. If you're in a pink system, your ship may look pink. If you're in a system with a nice blue star, bits of your ship will look a nice cool blue to reflect that. It's kinda like the nose of the old Purifier, only more better like.
2) You really, really need to see this thing in motion - screenshots don't do the beauty of the engine justice. It's not until you've seen a ship execute a slow turn and watched the shadows dance across the surface that you'll really appreciate what's been achieved.

The Dominix is hideous. The new color scheme just makes it worse. The model and the textures have more detail, and the self shading and lighting effects are great, especially on the other models. But the Dominix is just a horrible design, with no character or asthetics what so ever. Adding more detail to a pile of crap still doesn't change the fact that it's a pile of crap.
Clearly time and effort was devoted to remodeling a large number of ships in the game. The Minmatar shuttle looks amazing. Why couldn't the Dominix model be ditched and likewise completely re-envisioned?

The reason the chrome part of the ship is pink (you should have got the idea at the word Chrome), is because the nebula in that system is red/pink.

The red starlight reflecting off it's chrome parts is the least of it's problems.
